How do family histories shape our sense of home? How can language connect us across cultures and generations? Join the East Asian Studies Students’ Union (EASSU) for a conversation exploring migration and belonging across Latin American and East Asian diasporas. Our guests will connect personal experiences with their scholarship, with opportunities for students to ask questions and meet others across programs.

Welcome back! Whether you were involved with EASSU in previous years, joined us in past events, or are connecting with our community for the first time, we are happy to welcome you to the 2026–27 academic year.
The deadline to submit an executive nomination for first year reps has been cancelled; nominate yourself by the 21st of September! Nomination Form
EASSU is recruiting new executive members for the upcoming year. We are electing one Chinese Cultural Coordinator, one Japanese Cultural Coordinator, and two First-Year Representatives. If you are interested in getting involved, representing students, and helping us organize events and strengthen our community, we warmly encourage you to nominate yourself.
First year representatives will promote the East Asian Studies Student Union whenever possible in class, contribute to brainstorming and handling the logistics of EASSU events, and receive mentorship from other club members! This will be a year round commitment and may require effort during exam season and other busy times.
Cultural Coordinators will organize one or two events relevant to their country (Japan, China) per semester, with the goal of fostering a vibrant community of EASSU students, with up to $200 provided by EASSU per event.
We would also love to see you at our first General Meeting of the year on Monday, September 21, 2026, from 1:00–3:00 PM, held in the EAS Lounge, 14th Floor, Robarts Library. The election for our open executive positions and the launch of OnEast Journal will take place during the General Meeting.
During the meeting, you will have the opportunity to meet the EASSU team, learn about our plans for the year, hear from executive candidates, participate in the election, and connect with fellow students interested in East Asian Studies.
Please feel free to share them with friends and classmates who may be interested in joining EASSU.

We provide a variety of events, services, and academic pursuits to all students in the East Asian Studies department. You are automatically a member if you are an undergraduate enrolled in the EAS specialist/major/minor, or if you are taking an East Asian Studies course (EAS) as an elective. Watch out for our openings, for our academic and nonacademic events, and for any research opportunities that may come up!
Connect with your fellow EAS students through our Discord server! We are hoping to go on a massive recruiting drive so that our Discord server can be a viable space to make friends, share notes, and help others excel in the field!

This year, EASSU has paired up with Global Leaders Association, the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library and CASSU to bring you two fun events for this year’s Korea Week!
To kick-off our efforts in the week, we will be co-hosting a Poetry Reading and 오행시contest! Make sure you RSVP for the event here and come have fun with us for the afternoon!
If you are not free on the 13th, or if you’re looking for something more active, the next event is for you! We are also co-hosting a games night event on October 14th at OISE, and you will be able to experience and learn how to play traditional Korean games hands-on. Bring your friends with you and enjoy and afternoon of fun games! Registration is not needed for this event.

In charge of all graphic design work for EASSU, including pamphlets and flyers (may sometimes be asked to create posters); gets posters printed and put up around campus; handles all other promotional work such as contacting media; takes photographs at events; present at all events.
Event Coordinator
Will be working with the President and Treasurer in planning all events and making sure the finances are correct; will make sure that all events are well prepared prior to the event date; will take care of all the logistics of the events; present at all events.
Class-Rep/ Volunteer Coordinator
Establishes class representatives and volunteers for all EAS courses, and will update them with information for events that must be announced in EAS classes; present at all events.
Junior Executive (preferably a 1st or 2nd year student)

CCNC Call For Submissions from Youth
CCNC is seeking stories from youth from head tax families on their family’s experience with the Head Tax and Chinese Exclusion Act. We are able to pay a small honoraria – from $300 to $500 to a young person (24 years or under) or a student (30 years or under). We’re looking for writings of 800-1,000 words with a couple family photos.

Here is an outline that you could use to frame your essay:
1. Describe your family’s background: origins, year of immigration, and immigration pattern. How did the Head Tax and Chinese Exclusion Act affect your family?
2. Describe the first years in Canada: what was your family occupation, where did they live, how were they treated? What were the challenges and how did they overcome them?
3. How has the Chinese Canadian community changed over the decades? Do you/your peers identify with the community? How do you relate to Chinese newcomers and community/family members who immigrated to Canada?
4. Is there discrimination in Canada today? Explain.
Collecting these stories will help us to connect the generations; it will also help the head tax families to network with each other.
