Exciting events for 2016 UofT Korea Week

This year, EASSU has paired up with Global Leaders Association, the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library and CASSU to bring you two fun events for this year’s Korea Week!

To kick-off our efforts in the week, we will be co-hosting a Poetry Reading and 오행시contest! Make sure you RSVP for the event here and come have fun with us for the afternoon!

If you are not free on the 13th, or if you’re looking for something more active, the next event is for you! We are also co-hosting a games night event on October 14th at OISE, and you will be able to experience and learn how to play traditional Korean games hands-on. Bring your friends with you and enjoy and afternoon of fun games! Registration is not needed for this event.

Welcome to the 2013/2014 school year!

We have elections coming up on Friday September 27th at 5:30pm in Sidney Smith room 1069. 

We have positions open for our 2013/2014 EASSU team. If you are interested in taking on a leadership role, representing your fellow EAS students and helping to create an exciting experience outside the classroom, we highly encourage you to apply! Elections will take place on Friday September 27th at 5:30pm in Sidney Smith room 1069.

All students are welcome to attend to vote for this year’s executive team.

Secretary, Treasurer, Media Coordinator, Advertising Officer*, Event Coordinator, Class-Rep Coordinator, Junior Executive.

All applicants will be expected to make a short (approx. 3 minute) speech at our elections on Friday September 27 at 5:30pm. Positions
Secretary
Takes minutes at meetings and posts them within reasonable time frame; helps manages EASSU e-mail account; coordinates communication amongst members (i.e. scheduling events); manages office and administrative tasks; present at all events.

Treasurer
In charge of all student union finances; manages budgets for union and all events; compiles and submits receipts to ASSU; submits funding requests; present at all events.

Media Coordinator
Manages and updates Facebook group; manages and updates website; compiles mailing list along with President; present at all events. Must have a secure understanding on how to use HTML.

Advertising Officer
In charge of all graphic design work for EASSU, including pamphlets and flyers (may sometimes be asked to create posters); gets posters printed and put up around campus; handles all other promotional work such as contacting media; takes photographs at events; present at all events.

Event Coordinator
Will be working with the President and Treasurer in planning all events and making sure the finances are correct; will make sure that all events are well prepared prior to the event date; will take care of all the logistics of the events; present at all events.

Class-Rep/ Volunteer Coordinator
Establishes class representatives and volunteers for all EAS courses, and will update them with information for events that must be announced in EAS classes; present at all events.

Junior Executive (preferably a 1st or 2nd year student)
Locates and books rooms for all events; books A/V for events; manages set-up for events; assists President with any required tasks; present at all events.

CCNC Looking for Stories of Youth from Head Tax Families

CCNC Call For Submissions from Youth

CCNC is seeking stories from youth from head tax families on their family’s experience with the Head Tax and Chinese Exclusion Act. We are able to pay a small honoraria – from $300 to $500 to a young person (24 years or under) or a student (30 years or under). We’re looking for writings of 800-1,000 words with a couple family photos.

Here is an outline that you could use to frame your essay:

1. Describe your family’s background: origins, year of immigration, and immigration pattern. How did the Head Tax and Chinese Exclusion Act affect your family?

2. Describe the first years in Canada: what was your family occupation, where did they live, how were they treated? What were the challenges and how did they overcome them?

3. How has the Chinese Canadian community changed over the decades? Do you/your peers identify with the community? How do you relate to Chinese newcomers and community/family members who immigrated to Canada?

4. Is there discrimination in Canada today? Explain.

Collecting these stories will help us to connect the generations; it will also help the head tax families to network with each other.

On East Conference

EASSU will be hosting its fifth annual On East conference this year on Friday, March 23rd from 2-4pm! It will be in the Purple Lounge of the EAS department on the 14th floor of Robarts.

Every year we ask students, some of whose work will be published in our On East undergraduate journal, to present their research, offering the rest of the EAS community an opportunity to learn about their work and also giving the students an opportunity to receive comments and answer questions. Our finalized schedule for the event is as follows:

2:20 – 2:35: “Sites of Rebellion in Ghost in the Shell”
2:40 – 2:55: “The Construct of Gender Roles in Japan: Their Reinforcement, Contestation and Implications for the Future”

Scholarship Opportunities – Korean Canadian Scholarship Foundation

The Korean Canadian Scholarship Foundation is accepting applicants for its annual Korean Studies award! 3 students will be selected from University of Toronto for prizes of $1000. This is a great opportunity for all those interested in Korea!

To apply, you must be…

1. Working towards a minor or major in Korean Studies or have taken at least two courses in Korean Studies.

2. A Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant.

3. Enrolled full-time during 2011/2012 academic year and must have completed at least one full academic year in a post secondary education institution (e.g. university, college) in Canada or abroad, and must submit proof of registration prior to receipt of scholarship, if awarded.

Note that previous recipients are not eligible.

March 22: Presentation by Prof. Joshua Pilzer, Hearts of Pine: Songs in the Lives of Three Korean Survivors of the Japanese “Comfort Women”

We are excited to announce our upcoming academic seminar with Professor Joshua Pilzer, assistant professor of ethnomusicology at U of T.  It will take place on March 22nd from 2-4pm in the South Dining Room of Hart House. He will be discussing his recent book entitled Hearts of Pine: Song in the Lives of Korean Survivors of the Japanese “Comfort Women”. All are welcome to attend!

Imagining East Asia

EASSU is thrilled to announce our first annual showcase of undergraduate student artwork! We will be exhibiting student submissions of photography, paintings, drawings, and other works that have been inspired by East Asia. We welcome all members of the University of Toronto community to drop by the EAS Purple Lounge on the 14th floor of Robarts on March 12 from 2-5 to view this exciting collection. Light refreshments will be served. See you then!

On East Journal Deadline Extended

The deadline for submissions for the On East journal has been extended to 11:59pm, (Sunday) January 22nd 2012!

– Please clearly state the course it was written for, it this applies, as well as all your name, student number & email in the document

– Your document should be titled with your full name, and please number your submissions if you are submitting more than one essay (eg.

– Your paper must follow MLA format, with embedded citations. You must also supply an MLA-formatted bibliography.
